So I was really excited to get going with another campaign. After moving a few times for my fiancées job, and covid it hasn't been the easiest to jump into a game. Found a group on facebook that plays weekly, on a free evening, and was excited to get going.
The DM called me up earlier in the week to explain playing on Foundry, and get some character stats going. Between talking to the DM, rolling up a new character, and learning some of the ways these folks play online, I spent a solid 2 hours getting prepared for the game.
Game day was tonight, and we all jumped onto discord, and got going in foundry. I had enough back story that, and they kinda fudged me in as already existing with the party. As there was no tank I decided to roll up a tank and start from there. They had left off with finding a secret passage at the end of their last session, so I took the initiative to walk down the passage and into the next room.
In the new room were a few statues and a warning that only the 'righteous and true' may pass. I was looking around, and poked a statue but nothing happened. Another PC decided to just keep going through, which led to the statues coming alive (no surprise) and attacking. I happened to be the closest and these things hit hard. I was down to 5hp left before I even took a swing. After hitting them, we figured out they couldn't be harmed with strikes, and only took damage by magic - of which I have none.
Before my next round of action, I was down and rolling death saving throws. This is about 30 minutes into the game. I rolled a nat 20 on my second saving throw and got up. another character gave me a bit of healing. So, the DM targets me again and knocks me down. I spend the next hour and a half making 5 more death saving throws.
Pass. Fail. Fail. Pass. Fail.
2 hours into the game and my character is dead. By this time the DM had nerfed these statues so it wouldn't kill off the other people and made the statues just go back and stand in their spots so as to not deal more damage to a team with no real healers, and 1 magic user who keeps running away at the end of each turn.
Now I don't know how you guys play, but when I'm sitting on a dead character - I'm done with the session.
"just rename your character!" they all said, which goes against the point of killing off characters.
I've played session where we barely make it through, and sessions that are unbearably unproductive. But I think I've actually had good DMs in the past who enjoy progressing the game.
Oh well.
