We all know where half orcs and half elfs come from, but where do halflings come from?

Where is the Ling species? The lings would have to be a small species. Perhaps they are fey or maybe demonic? Or maybe they were a group of humans. A God was upset with their god and cut them in half and the only way their God could bring them back was as 2 different beings.
