What experiences have you had with mediators, good or bad?

When my first marriage ended 10 years ago, we worked with a mediator who really helped a lot in getting us to resolve all the specific issues--it was especially important because we had a 10-yo together and kid-related issues are often so sensitive. Have you folks had any notable bad experiences with mediators? Obviously things will vary from one mediator to the next, as with a therapist or a lawyer--everyone's different. But are there problems you feel like using a mediator created for you? I feel like I was lucky my first divorce went as smoothly as it did and I don't know if this one will necessarily do that.
