Yo what the actual...Arx is insanely difficult

My wife and I are playing through the game after given to us during quarantine.
We have sunk many hours into this game to enjoy together and have loved it.
We just got to Arx and we are stuck.
First off, we are bummed our companions died. Is there a way to save them and bring them along (Fane and Lohse).
2nd, can we get a recommendation where to start? We went to the Kraken and died very quickly.
We then ran into the voidwoken ravaging the town, we got killed after they killed paladins.
