If I’m interested in a premade character, should I play as them?

If there’s a premade character whose backstory I find interesting, is it better to play as them, or just a recruit them as a companion. Lohse’s whole backstory about something trying to possess her seems pretty cool so was thinking about playing her.
P.S. this is my very first time playing so sorry if this is a fun question.
