So I knew Martyrs was supposedly disturbing but didn’t know much else. Went into it mostly blind and wow… yeah it was pretty brutal and made me feel a lot of things but I honestly felt more sadness than disgust. After much thought, I’ve decided that I do like the movie and can see myself rewatching. The cinematography and the score sure were something. I’ve always heard about this one and a Serbian Film. Don’t think I’d ever watch a Serbian Film though. Recently heard about Inside and thought I’d give it a try. Thoughts on Inside? And if you have any trivia about Martyrs let’s hear it!
I wouldn’t call this trivia, but I understand Martyrs as a discourse on suffering, broken into three acts: 1. Observing the long term effects of suffering (Lucy). 2. Observing the immediate effects of suffering (Metalhead). 3. Experiencing suffering (Anna).
The beauty of this progression is that it establishes psychological dread BEFORE the suffering begins. Anna already knows what’s coming. She’s seen it. That makes it infinitely more dreadful in my opinion; I cannot imagine a worse fate than being chained in that room on day 1 knowing what’s in store.
