I met someone who had worked as a waitress, and I had no idea about how it worked until, she explained it to me, but basically in the conversation I said "Why don't they just get better Jobs?" Abd that didn't go well, almost broke the narrative of our correlation. It's worked through and we spoke for some time after, almost a year.
So, granted, my views have changed, but I still kinda think that if you don't make enough at your job, why not get a better one? It's wrong they way it works in some places on how they lean heavy on the expectation of tips and don't pay the employees a livable wage, but why work under those conditions?
I have no college degree, I grew up poor as shit. I don't have anyone to back me up either, what I make is how I survive. I knew straight away working in a restaurant was not for me, I did jobs that required limited interactions with people, then interactions with a set group of people, the constant flow of attitudes, the constant social exchange that comes from service jobs (aren't all jobs a service?) was not for me, I'm too blunt and wouldn't handle the 8th or 10th snob or asshat that I'd have to deal with- but I found a way, so couldn't anybody?
I tip now 'cause I guess I get it, but hey, I'd just like to see people do better, and it's still hard to hold my tongue, especially when I go out to eat and see the next table over acting a fool.
I get circumstance, I don't get not changing it.
