With his civil suits, would the only impact be if The House voted for impeachment?
What if the investigations into his charitable foundation result in more than just fines? Not sure what possible laws he might have broken, or if any of them would result in criminal charges.
President-elect Trump due to appear in court at trial starting later this month
- Defendant in 2 federal court civil trials over alleged fraud in his Trump University
- Trump University students from California, Florida and New York, for defrauding consumers and the elderly
- Other federal suit is national in scope and invokes a federal racketeering statute
- Defendant in a class-action lawsuit over Trump University
- New York state investigation into his charitable foundation
- Plaintiff in a pair of suits filed against celebrity chefs who backed out of plans to open restaurants in his new luxury Washington hotel
In regards to precedent with civil suits:
In a 1997 case involving President Bill Clinton and a woman suing him for sexual harassment, Paula Jones, the Supreme Court ruled that a sitting president is not immune from litigation over actions taken before he took office.
The high court did say deference to the president in terms of scheduling would be appropriate, though not a deferral until he leaves office.
