Is it ok to try to speak to a specific alter?

So my gf has DID and her protective alter has been causing issues for my other partner, K, we’re in an open poly and originally she was fine with everyone but now K is afraid of her and I want to talk to her about it but I’m not sure if it would be more effective to attempt to speak directly to that alter or to the host?
