This is my first time posting in this forum. Idk if anyone can help me, but any advice is welcomed.
I (F23) guess I really just want to vent about my twin, maybe to someone who may be able to understand. She has cerebral palsy and it doesn't just affect her physically (she has a limp and her left side is weaker than her right). It also affects her behaviorally & cognitively/intellectually, so she reacts to things in a way I may not and doesn't understand things she should. She also needed a lot of help in college, leading me to put off my schoolwork before hers.
We both graduated college in May & I was worried she wouldn't be able to handle it, especially since our late aunt passed in December 2021. My aunt & my sis had a very close bond because my aunt was always so patient with her. A patience I & my family don't have.
My sis loves being around people because of the attention & being social with others. I think it makes her feel "normal" which she's told me before that oftentimes, she doesn't feel like because of her disabilities. In short, she isn't handling college ending or the other changes in her life well.
To be fair, most of the stuff I'm listing has been her behavior for years, but has just increased as we've gotten older:
- She barely comes out of her room except to, in her words, get something to eat, shower & brush her teeth. She just sits in her bed, doesn't clean her room & isn't motivated to do much.
- She barely spends time with me or our family. if she does, it's always something SHE wants to do or she talks about something that interests HER. I don't think she knows how to not think about what she wants, but that could be because my mom & aunt always did everything she asked.
- She has eating issues. When she was younger, she used to eat all kinds of food, but as she's gotten older, her diet has been reduced to eggs, chicken, and soda. No fruit, no veggies, no protein, etc. She's not consuming the nutrients she needs which has affected her body & her health (cavities from the sugar in soda; migraines; exhaustion; she's underweight, etc.).
- She's constantly calling family members who barely speak to her. The one friend she has is suffering from mental issues, so he isn't calling as much. Because she has no interest in spending time with us, she talks to other family members we're not close with & has done some shady things in the past.
In short, I'm worried that she won't be able to function as an adult with the changes happening in her life. Will she be able to handle a job? Is she capable of having a boyfriend? Will she ever be able to live on her own? It's starting to worry me. I've been pleading with my mom to get her a therapist, but I think sometimes my mom just doesn't want to acknowledge that this is very serious.
If anyone has any advice at all or some words of encouragement, please feel free to comment. Thank you & God bless y'all. -Jazz
