There was no telling what one might discover in the Briargrove.
Sturdy trees of the likes of hardwoods and impossibly-large willows made up a near-impenetrable canopy of leaves, and beneath their gnarled sprawling roots, all manner of shrubbery and plant life grew uncontested to the point of overgrowth. It was because of this that despite the few well-trodden paths the local population had carved out through the wood, very few were courageous enough to truly map out the Briargrove’s expanse. There was no knowing what manner of beastie, monstrosity and otherwise might have made its home within the untouched depths of the wood; those that made their homes at the edge of the Briargrove erected walls around their homesteads and towns and cities to keep their families safe.
Life was not so inhospitable around the Briargrove thankfully. Those with entrepreneurial desires made hefty coin from the lumber harvested from the forest’s trees, the medicinal that grew throughout the wood, and the animals hunted for their pelts and horns and meat. In time, the population grew—healthily at that.
But while so many flocked to these cities and towns, Aeda was happy to keep herself away from all the noise.
She called the Briargrove home, and had a homestead for herself in middle of the wood. A wood-and-stone cottage, a garden, a small flock of goats and chickens saw to her needs—of which there were not many. Those that had grown up by the Briargrove knew to find Aeda for her medicines and draughts, and the coin that came to her was much appreciated. Though she lived frugally, Aeda afforded herself the occasional luxury every now and then—visiting the nearby town for a bottle of fine wine, or a basket full of cakes and sweets.
She was a striking woman. Young, with long dark hair and soft eyes. With her pointed ears, she might have been elven, but her body was buxom with womanly curves, instead of the elven willowy build. Aeda was always seen in long linen dresses, a leather belt and apron around her waist, the pockets filled with all manner of dried herbs and foraged material from the Briargrove.
Though her visits to town were infrequent, Aeda was the subject of much speculation. How a woman like her could so fearlessly live within the Briargrove bewildered the townsfolk. She kept no companions other than her animals—no husband nor brother or any other family, but there were those that would swear upon their faith that Aeda was not alone out there in the woods.
She had a man, or what seemed to look like a man at a glance. A lover, whose embrace she happily fell into whenever he darkened her doorstep.
Those unknowing witnesses claimed that whoever he was, the man had appeared out of nowhere from deep the Briargrove, only to be welcomed into Aeda’s home without hesitation. And afterwards, strange sounds could be heard from the home—though it was not much of a mystery to those that knew what happened between a man and a woman in the dead of night.
