(I picked this name because of the Marvel super hero Daredevil)
"It's always the same thing every time," thought Matt in frustration as he tapped his cane from side to side down the sidewalk. He was walking back from work with a pay check on his way to a first date. The air was warm for September, a breeze in the air, birds chirping away, and kids playing baseball across the street, Matt could hear that and smiled. And then he thought back to his date, which for most men would have been exciting, but he already knew how it would go.
It always started the same. One of the well meaning girls he knew, who all had boyfriends or husbands, would come up to him and say "I have someone for you to meet. She's gorgeous, you two would make a great couple. Did I mention she's studying personal support work, or early childhood education, or psychology, or special needs" You get the idea, one of the fields where you need to be empathetic always, looking out for those vulnerable and misfortunate.
Matt was a little desperate, so he always agreed. The women were nice, the date as far as he could tell always started well, and then the awkward times would begin.
The same question to start it off "So how blind are you exactly?" to which he would respond that he had no useful vision, and then try to change the subject. But that subject, and that feeling of being the bug under the microscope would be the tone of the evening.
He felt he always had to answer the same list of questions, queries which he had memorised and made up answers to at the age of 7. "First dates are supposed to be awkward, but shouldn't conversation flow both ways" he had thought.
Maybe it was his demeanour. He had been called a great listener, having a teddie bear aesthetic, and had been the best friend in many situations but never quite boyfriend material. Isn't there more to me than this? he thought.
Matt thought a while in confusion: I don't know exactly what I want, just what I don't.
He got a whiff on the fresh September breeze, the local bakery. He decided to get a box of chocolate doughnuts for his date. "Never arrive empty handed" as his mom would say. He hummed along to the catchy 90s song on the radio, found his Braille cash and paid for the hot glazed chocolate doughnuts.
So the next part is up to you. What are you looking for out of this date? Will you tease and romance our blind protagonist, will the date start out awkward until common ground is found? will it be a one night stand or the start of a sensual sexual flirty relationship?
