I plopped down on the couch and turned on the TV. It wasn’t like I had anything I wanted to watch, but the background noise was nice.

It had been a couple weeks since Ashley decided she no longer wanted to be together.

“It’s not you; it’s me,” she told me.

Damn right it wasn’t me – I always treated her well, I got along nicely with her family and the sex was great. But for whatever reason, I suppose she wanted to see what else was out there. I nodded along—what good was it to try and change her mind if it was already made up?

It still didn’t mean it didn’t hurt.

The phone ringing stopped me from lifting myself off the couch.

“No, I don’t,” I answered tersely.

“Well, your father has plans to go hang out with the guys, so I thought maybe I could take you out to dinner.”

“Eh, I'm really not up to going out anywhere," I replied.

"Oh, come on! We’ll go wherever you want, and I’ll buy. I think getting out of that apartment for a bit will help you feel better!”

My mother had always been a sweetheart. She always knew the right things to say or do to pick me up when I was feeling down or out of it. And although I really didn’t feel like saying yes, since all I wanted to do was just hang out by myself, I couldn’t find it in me to tell her no.

“OK, I’m in,” I told her after a few seconds’ pause.

“Oh, good! I’m glad. But if I’m buying, you have to drive.”

A small smile tugged at the corners of my lips, something I hadn’t felt in quite some time. “I suppose I can do that.”

“Good, good. Well, I’ll let you get to cleaning. Better get it looking all nice for the next girl who comes through there!” she said cheerily.

Little did both of us know that on that Saturday night, she would be that girl.
