I couldn’t blame the neighbors if they wanted to kick my ass. But with how frustrated I was getting, it probably wouldn’t have been a good idea for them.

“Please open up! I know you’re in there!” I yelled through the door before delivering another series of knocks. “Look, we just want to make sure you’re OK…open up!”

I delivered one more hard closed-fist strike against my sister’s apartment door, then held it there. I rested my forehead against the door as it was becoming clearer to me that no matter how angry I got, no matter how loudly I demanded she open up and let me in…it wouldn’t matter.

Just as defeat was sinking in, I heard the deadbolt clicking. Raising my head from the door, I managed to escape falling face-first onto the floor as my sister opened the door.

She looked a mess – eyes red, cheeks stained with tears, barely dressed in just a tank top and short shorts. I wouldn’t have been surprised if she hadn’t showered in the past day or so.

Just as I was about to say hi, she snapped at me.

“There! You see me, right? I’m OK. Leave me alone.”

She moved to slam the door in my face, but I extended a hand to block her from doing so. I winced at the pain and tried to shake the sting out.

“No, I’m not leaving yet.”

She huffed as I made my way through the doorway and stepped inside.

“Why are you here? Don’t you have better things to do?”

The truth was that yeah, I would’ve liked to be anywhere but here, dealing with a miserable, recently single little sister. I could’ve been out with friends or trying to get laid.

“Well, if you bothered to answer one of the 10 million times Mom and Dad called you, I probably wouldn’t be here. They’re—we’re worried about you, y’know. This isn’t healthy to be living like…this.”

I looked around the apartment. Dishes were piling up in the sink and the trash can by the kitchen counter looked like it’d be spewing take-out containers and bags at any moment. I could only imagine what her bedroom looked like.

“What do you care? What does anyone care at this point?”

“Oh, stop it. You’re getting all dramatic and crazy over some guy—”

In hindsight, this was probably the dumbest thing I could’ve said.

“Some guy? Some guy? I was hoping to marry that guy, and now it’s done, and now I have to start all fucking over again! Fuck you for saying that, Brandon. Get the fuck out!”

She angrily pointed at the door, and I could see her trembling. I stood firmly.

“GET! THE FUCK! OUT!”

I sighed and looked down at the carpeted floor for a moment, then lifted my head to meet her with a shrug.

“OK. I get it.”

Turning on my heel, I took the couple steps back toward her door and turned the doorknob. Just as I opened the door, I heard a voice from behind me. It wasn’t in the fiery tone I had heard seconds before, the tone that damn near could have gotten us a visit from the cops. Instead, it was a soft voice…a sad voice.
