The night air is cold and still. The night sky pure black from an absent moon. My steps are light as I walk down the well worn road towards the city that I once called home. I see torchlight float behind large stone walls. A gentle breeze rolls towards me, carrying the scent of a wide variety of beings that now reside in the sprawling city. My vision remains perfectly clear despite the pure darkness of the night, a boon from my fathers curse. I return to my home to learn more about the fate of my family. Many years ago, well before my birth, my father sought immortality. He studied all manner of subjects in vain desperation of discovering unending life, like many fools before him. However, my father succeeded where all others failed. Hidden deep within the dark secrets of forgotten worlds, bound in accursed tomes of a sinister past, was the key. Old runes and ancient symbols revealed a ritual that granted the immortality my father sought. However, he was not privy to the consequences of this discovery, and preformed the ritual on not just himself, but all of us. My mother, my brothers, and a select few he considered dearest friends. For a time all was perfect, we were healthy and strong, stronger than ever. All of our senses seemed to have improved ten fold, and best of all, the dark ceased to blind us. Then, something changed. A crippling hunger gradually took hold. An unnatural thirst gripped our throats, a thirst that could only be sated by one drink, blood. At first we only fed on prisoners, those already sentenced to death. However, it didn't take long for my father and his kin to begin feeding on their political opponents. Fearing that those I held most dear would turn into monsters I warned them of the dark future they were headed towards, that they would be discovered if they continued their ways. I was ignored, cast out by those I cared for most. So I fled my home, seeking a way to save my family, and myself. I was too late. During my desperate travels I learned that my family was tried and executed for a long list of crimes. So now I have returned, a new man, to learn more of their fate, while avoiding meeting it myself.
