Just reviewing my blowout kit for a Baja trip coming up and wondering what the minimum amount of oil a bike needs to limp 20-30 miles into town for a proper repair and fluid change? I've had occasion to repair more than one case with JB Weld on the trail and have always just carried an extra quart in Baja for this purpose. Now I'm wondering if I could bring half that, say 500ml.
Engine case damage usually falls into one of two categories, catastrophic (you're finished) or compromised (if you have the stuff, you can get on with it). I'm talking about compromised case damage, like a rock flips or other debris and cracks the case, you tip over onto something sharp and it punches a hole, etc. Usually, these things are noticed, and if you're aware, you can salvage a lot of your oil. JB Weld comes out, you clean things up, patch it, add oil as needed, and on you go. So, I'm wondering what the minimum amount of oil is, that a bike motor needs to run under a very small load (just limping it into town) before real damage begins. Specifically, as it pertains to newer 2019 KTM EXC's.
