Trading items with second player?

Hello. I’m playing with my friend on my console and not sure how to drop and item to let him pick it up to use. Is it because we are both using seasonal characters? Every time I drop an item it only lets me pick it up. There’s a better way to trade that I haven’t figured out yet? Thanks in advance!
