Do I need Xbox Live Gold to authenticate/play D2R on Xbox series X?

So I got a series X for Christmas and started buying games for it. Seeing as the bundle for D2R D3 was the same price as D3, I jumped on it.
Now I signed up for Battle.net, but didn't link my account (nor can I find where to do so), and I don't see a way to add the code I get when I load up the game. I also get the "failure to authenticate" error. However I don't have Gold so I can't play online, and didn't really plan to, but do I need it anyway?
