Battlepass redemption question....

So I have some MS points on the verge of expiring and figured out of all the offered things I can redeem it on, the pass seems to be the one that works best for me. The question is, it would be pretty pointless to do so since this season is about to end. I wonder if buying the battlepass locks me in to this season or can I choose when to actually apply it? Or does just buying it apply it to the current season? Thanks all!
