With recent discussions on Devil May Cry 5, I've seen a few posts of people being keen towards the idea of a Devil May Cry featuring the supposed son Dante mentions during the ending of Devil May Cry one.

Personally, I'm actually against this. I feel Devil May Cry should return back to its roots and expand from there. The series has a lot of potential with the history left behind by Mundus & Sparda, we've yet to see any angels outside the fallen ones from 3 and of course, we need added depth on both the current characters and the setting (a game partially set in hell, for example).

I suppose the biggest issues I have with a game featuring Dante’s son would be the following:

1. Moving away from iconic & popular characters. Right now, I feel like the driving factors outside of the series solid gameplay would be attachment us fans have with the two juggernauts, Dante & Vergil. And I suppose, to a lesser extent Lady. I feel like the former two should get ample screentime and whilst wishful for Lady/Trish, they also deserve their moments. This is particularly important for Devil May Cry 5 as it’s reintroducing the series after such a long hiatus. It’s important to give these characters the screentime they deserve more so than anything else and if the games a success, they can take more liberties in future games – in my opinion, of course. I think Trish is the biggest offender right now, for the series main female representative (I dunno if heroine is a more accurate term?), she’s had very little development or expansion on her character. At least with Lady, there’s the romancing sub-plot with Dante.

2. Dante’s son could be a flop. This is probably the biggest issue I have. If they introduce a new character, There are a few avenues they could go with this route. They could make his son almost identical to Dante and inherit his personality (which is very likely), however it then kind of raises the question of what the point is introducing a new character to act as nothing more than an identical replacement? The mixed reception from Nero hopefully moved Capcom towards having a proper discussion regarding this. I think an accurate comparison would be Soul Calibur V replacing a lot of the older cast with newer characters who just weren’t well received compared to the older generation.

3. Do we need good/playable characters? I feel like as of right now, the series doesn't need any new playable characters, at least for now. The more characters introduced, the more likely older characters are pushed into the background. I mean the most iconic example would be Lucia who hasn’t even had a hint or throwback towards her. Even now, I think the writers would have a lot of trouble with directing a cohesive story split between Dante, Vergil and Nero. I think a great example of an ideal cast working would be Devil May Cry 3, where Capcom had showcased all three of the main characters (Dante, Vergil & Lady) very well, attaching you to all three of them and also the overarching plot. New characters are alright, but they shouldn’t steal the focus of the pre-existing character. At the same time, they do have to be interesting as well unlike say Kyrie. I think Lady should be the ideal for any new character.

At the same time, I do respect the people who want a game featuring Dante's son. I'm mainly curious about other people’s opinion regarding this topic, so what do you all think?
