Metro Detroit: reasonably affordable homes with at least “okay” schools?

Post Body
Married 30 year old here.
Kids are on the way. Wife and I both have “good” careers but it seems irresponsible to drop the money required to live in a reasonable house in the districts that are traditionally thought of as “great” (Northville comes to mind)
Any suggestions on middle ground cities? Something in metro Detroit with tolerable schools in which houses don’t start at $550k?
