I know this is long, so you can skip to the bottom paragraph to get the jist without the deeper lore...
I just got malfeasance last weekend, and with it the cool quest that tagged along. In the modded corrupted strike that you complete, Callum, a "Shadow of Yor", is said to be killed by "The man with the golden gun", said by the drifter. This seemed familiar, so I dug into some old destiny 1 lore and saw the description of the last word, which is, " 'Yours, not mine' -Legendary renegade Hunter Shin Malphur to Dredgen Yor".
Now, this name Shin Malphur seemed familiar to me, so I dug into his lore for a bit. From what I could gather, Shin was a gunslinger who began to question the cult that worshipped Dredgen Yor, a corrupted ex- guardian and owner of the infamous Thorn. Shin began to worry about these cult members, "Shadows of Yor" they dubbed themselves, and their attempted replicas of the Thorn, where they tried to remove the corruption, yet it didn't work. After seeing these cult members play with death in a few crucible matches in Widow's Court, his ghost asked what he is going to do about them, he said he will do what has to be done.
After consulting the Drifter about the Shadows, which I easily found connections between him and the shadows, if he isn't a full member already, Shin found the location of Callum, a member already mentioned, and comforts him after Callum killed his ghost with a carved thorn projectile. This may be one effect of the corruption of any guardian weilding Thorn. Shin asks the Shadow if he has any last words, and Callum simply said that he will never kill all of them. After thst, Shin draws his golden gun, and paints the rock behind Callum with his ashes. His new goal became to cleanse the system and wipe out all of the shadows before they can corrupt anyone else with the Thorn.
That is where Shin's story currently ends, but at the end of the Malfesence Quest, the Drifter speaks of "The man with the golden gun" hunting his crew down. The man is obviously Shin, as he is a gunslinger, but I was wondering, why would the driver give callum's location to Malphur if he didn't want him killed? My theory is that the drifter left the Shadows of Yor after he saw the effects of the thorn's corruption, and now is trying to help them by cleansing the Thorn himself and saving them from the corruption of the hive bones on the gun. The collection of motes of dark in Gambit may be tied to this.
Now that the Drifter knows about Shin hunting his former brothers, his now goal now seems to be to hunt down Shin Malphur before he kills his "crew", as he referred to them. Both of them agree that they need to undo the corruption, but they have different ideas on how. That is why we worked with the drifter to create Malfesence, it is an edited version of the Thorn that does not corrupt us, and its purpose is to defeat Shin before he can wipe out the rest of the shadows of Yor, now in hiding.
To push this along, I believe that this all won't be touched much on the upcoming DLC, black armory, which I have a whole seperate theory about, but will be the revolving lore around the spring 2019 DLC, Joker's Wild, which has the drifter as it's vertex, and more importantly, his ship and rock in tow. My theory is that this rock contains the rest of the shadows of Yor, but their corruption is complete, so they are pure entities of darkness now. And in this DLC, Shin Malphur somehow breaks into the rock to kill the rest of the shadows, but he is sloppy and many escape that aren't killed. Out job will be to track Shim Malphur as he tracks the sgadows, both to bring them back and finally kill the renegade Hunter, claiming his famous hand cannon, the last word, as our reward, or in some broken form to be repaired like the ace of spades.
That's my theory, and to clarify, none of this is confirmed to be in JW, it's just bits and pieces of lore I stitched together from the two Destiny's. If I got anything wrong, and I very likely did, please leave a comment so I can edit it. Thank you all!!!
Edit: There may be somewhere in here that bungie can fit in getting the Thorn too, so I guess we will have to wait.
