Do the whole quest on one character. Do not get the quest from the kiosk for a second character it can bug out your quest and leave you stuck. If you are stuck do NOT delete your Quest or items it will only make things worse.

From what I have read Bungie is aware of at least part of the problem

To clarify I started it on my warlock and then grabbed the quest from the kiosk and finished on my titan. Now it does not work (I cannot interact with the pod) a lot of people having the same problem (some at different steps) have it because they tried doing it on multiple characters at the same time. The key section of the quest does not apply to all of the characters which bugs out the quest.

Also if you have figured out any work arounds please share

Edit: The quest is fixed, The strange key is purchasable on the second page of XUR and if you need to you can run the quest on a second character.
