Solo dungeon runs

I see posts almost daily about doing solo dungeon/strikes, so the other day I tried to do Shadow Lake I believe and was hoping to try it solo, but the matchmaking screen appeared so I exited and called it a night. Normally I do my bounties & maybe a run or 2 of Dares of Eternity. Wanting to do a bit more solo, so how would I get into a solo dungeon or strike?
