Author's Note: The next part in Becoming a Hunter but also a sequel to /u/RewsterSause Baptism to the Crucible
Viper was performing maintenance on his sniper rifle in Cayde old nook in the Hangar of the Tower till he heard footsteps coming towards him and looked to see Luna come running towards him at full throttle excited for her next lesson today, “Luna! Saw your first Crucible match on the screens last week. You did great for your first time and with only a hand cannon at that. Geez, gonna have to step up my game to keep up with you.”
The young awoken girl laughs and smiles proudly at her mentor, “Thanks Viper. So what are we doing today?” She looks excited and he can’t help but feel proud and reminded of other Hunter’s he’s trained like Selene, Kali-2, and Rio to name a few. He looked up to see his friend and brother Revenant-19 just arriving in the hangar and watching from a distance.
Viper looks at Luna with a smile as best as an Exo can, “We’re going proper scouting today out in the wilds.” She looks at him excited and jumps for joy at the news as Rev approaches, “Do you think she’s ready for field operations?” The Warlock asks with concern in his voice. Viper can’t help but appreciate how much of his old friend he sees from days long past. The Hunter always knew Sai’s death had created an irreparable divide between the two Guardians that he always tried so desperately to mend as his friend grew colder and distant each day driven by his loss. But no matter how much he tried he could never seem to fix anything. But now, in the form of a young awoken girl who’s come into their lives the hunter finally feels that divide slowly mending with her light.
Viper nods to the Warlock and reassures him as he turns around to finish the final touches on his Sniper, “It’s just a simple supply mission in the Cosmodrome. My scout Kali-2 spotted one of Cayde’s old caches in the Mothyards and Banshee asked if I could collect some Spinmetal in the area while I’m there. He’s been running low and he needs it to make and refine weapons.”
As Viper turns around he can still see the concern hidden behind the Warlock’s helmet, “I’ll keep her safe. You gotta stop worrying Rev. I know she’s young and still wet behind the ears but you need to let her spread her wings and fly on her own one day.” He puts a hand on the Warlock’s shoulder reassuringly, “Maybe when she’s ready we’ll be her fireteam when it’s time for strikes and you can see how much she’s grown. I’d love to put another Golden Gun bullet in Fikrul’s skull with you by my side like old times. Remember the Great Ahamkara Hunting days as well?” He takes his hand off Rev’s shoulder and playfully punches it. Rev doesn’t respond to which V is okay with because he understands that it’s been so long since the two have had open and honest conversations like these.
Viper looks down at Luna who’s been listening quietly and watching the two Exo’s intently the whole time, “Ready to explore the unknown Luna?” She nods and makes her way to Viper’s dropship quickly. Viper and Revenant watch her as she runs off to which Viper says, “One day. She’ll be doing that on her own Rev. She’s going to be great. I know it because she has a very protective pair of Guardians watching over her and training her together.” He starts making his way to his dropship as Aria materializes beside him, “Ship’s ready to launch V. Coordinates to The Steepes drop point are all set. Ready to kick ass Mr. Hunter?” V chuckles at his ghost, “Always partner.” He doesn’t turn around but waves to his friend all the same, “We’ll contact you when our mission is complete. See ya later Rev.” Viper quickly climbs up the steps into his jumpship as Rev stands there watching the two Hunter’s fly off.
As V pilots his jumpship Luna stands behind him and asks, “What’s the Cosmodrome like?” Viper chuckles at her curiosity and says, “Me describing it wouldn’t do it any justice. You gotta see it with your own eyes, my little Hunter-In-Training.” She pouts at his roundabout answer and asks, “Okay…tell me about you and Revenant. Anytime I see you two talk you both look like you’ve known each other for a long time.”
Viper sighs at that, “Nosy aren’t we? Rev is an old friend. We knew each other through one mutual guardian. Sai Mota. I used to run a lot of scouting missions with Sai back in the day and Rev well…Rev was very close to Sai and the feeling was mutual on her part. The three of us would often get together in The Last City recounting our adventures over drinks and food. She was quiet like Rev except for when she was giving a speech.” Viper chuckled lightly remembering some of her infamous speeches, “She would go on these long winded speeches that never seemed to end but somehow always lifted anyone’s spirits when they heard them. It was something special to witness.”
Luna listens with quiet interest as V tells his stories. She liked his stories because the way he described them was like watiching him paint a picture of every memory he recounted to her. The Hunter continued, “Rev and I weren’t what you’d call the best of friends or even the likeliest pair of friends. Me, a sarcastic wisecracking jackass.” He points at Luna seriously for a split second and says, “Don’t tell Rev I’ve been teaching you any cursing.” and goes back to piloting, “And Rev was quiet and almost analytical of everything he did or saw. Typical Warlock stuff ya know? Yet somehow I considered him dear to me like a brother. Maybe it was because we were both Exo’s or maybe it was Sai’s influence. But he’s one of my oldest-” And still living Viper thought quietly to himself, “-friends I’ve known and…I really can’t imagine life without him around.” Viper chuckles at the thought, “Bet he doesn’t feel the same way though. I’m pretty sure he feels I just annoy him most days but I’m okay with that. I like him for who he was and who he is now. I’d still hold a deep respect for him no matter where the future takes him.”
Luna smiles at that knowledge, “Do you think I’ll make a friend like that one day on my own? Someone like you and Revenant? Or maybe even like Sai?” Viper smiles kindly at her, “I know you will Luna. You got a big heart and people gravitate towards those with kind hearts like yours. Even Hunter’s lead with their hearts and those with the biggest hearts can often become heroes in the eyes of others. So I know one day you’ll meet friends that are irreplaceable in your eyes.” Luna beams proudly at this revelation.
Aria and Polaris both chime in simultaneously, “We’re approaching our destination.” They nod and Viper quickly presses a button on his console opening his weapons cache, “Time for you to pick your second weapon of choice today Luna. You’ve gotten good with that Hand Cannon but now it’s time you learned another weapon to add to your arsenal.”
Luna looks at the wall of weapons on display. There was Viper’s infamous Subtle Calamity Compound Bow which has seen it’s fair share of wear and tear ever since the Scorn first appeared. Alongside it was a brand new Arsenic Bite-4b Recurve Bow. His old Beloved Sniper Rifle sat proudly on display in the center, the purple gemstones catching Luna’s eye as she looked at it. Underneath that though is what really catches her attention. The sleek black chromium finish and the unique design of the Sniper Rifle’s design. She lifted it off the display surprised at how lightweight it was. She remembers the stories V had told her of Lady Efrideet and how she killed so many Cabal with her Rifle during the red war. She looked at the IKELOS_SR_v1.0.2 Sniper Rifle and it just felt so natural in her hands, “This one Viper.” V engages the autopilot for the remainder of the way as he prepares for transmat.
He looks to see what she picked and smiles, “Lady Efrideet left a lasting impression huh?” She nods and looks back at the display case to notice that underneath each weapon was a display with two sets of numbers on them. As she slings the Sniper on her back she looks to V and asks, “What are these numbers underneath each weapon?” Viper looks down at her and winks, “Every kill I’ve gotten with them in both the field and Crucible.” She looks back and studies each one. She points at the Subtle Calamity Bow and looks at Viper in shock, “You killed over 40,000 enemies with this Bow!?” Viper nods, “Yep. The Bow and I have a long history that I’ll share with you one day. Sadly, she’s gone through too much to see anymore use so she just hangs proudly in my cache as a reminder of what I used to be.”
Luna doesn’t quite get what Viper is going on about and wants to ask but she can tell that he isn’t as energetic and happy talking about it which clues her in that it must be a sad memory so she doesn’t pry any further. V looks at her and smiles, “Ready for transmat?” Luna nods and the two bodies begin disintegrating from the leg up.
As the two land on the drop point. Luna takes in her first sight of the Cosmodrome. She stares in awe and wonder at how hauntingly beautiful the valley is as the morning sun bathes an orange glow over the area. The rusted and dilapidated buildings and vehicles that strewn the valley paint this picture of what was once a bustling busy area in the Golden Age. Over the horizon she sees the abandoned colony ship now known as The Devil’s Spire base to the Fallen House of Devils stands abandoned for centuries where it was to be used to usher hope for those fleeing The Darkness during the collapse but never got it’s chance to launch.
Luna turns to V with a smile, “Is Earth always this beautiful V?” V nods, “Always Luna. And there’s more beauty to be found all across the stars-“ He starts pointing towards the sky, “-from the snowy mountains of Europa, to the Dreaming City within the Reef, and maybe one day we can even visit the jungles and the Ishtar Collective of Venus.” Luna’s smile grows bigger and wider in wonder at how big and almost infinite the world feels to her and all of it is waiting to be explored by her and her ghost.
“You know I can hear you right?” Shaw Han calls out from down below. Viper chuckles, “Shaw. I see you still haven’t gotten rid of those arms like I told you too.” Shaw gives a lopsided smile to his fellow hunter, “Still as sarcastic as ever aren’t we V? I earned these bones remember?” Viper shakes his head and rolls his eyes, “Oh I remember. That thing gave you a whole heap of hell and then some to kill it’s sorry ass.” Shaw nods proudly, “And don’t you forget it. So what brings you to Cosmodrome today?” Luna appears alongside Polaris who is floating beside her and looks down at Shaw and waves, “Hello!” She says proudly. Shaw waves back, “Hey ya. New recruit V?” Viper nods, “Her name’s Luna and her partner is Polaris. A fellow Hunter-In-Training.” He nods approvingly, “Always good to see another one of us. Guessing you’re training her?” Viper and Luna jump down and walk up to Shaw together, “Yep. Revenant asked me. Couldn’t say no to an old friend ya know? We’re here to gather supplies for Banshee and one of my scouts spotted one of Cayde’s old caches in the Mothyards.” Shaw nods, “Intel says The Mothyards have been quiet lately but expect Fallen and Hive activity when you venture out there. Are you going by Sparrow?” Viper shakes his head, “Nope. We’re going old-fashioned. By foot today. Gotta teach these two the importance of scouting and I think it’s about time she learns how to throw both a grenade and her knife at her enemies.” The two Hunters chuckle as they see Luna get a little excited over the news, “She’s got spunk. I like it. Well happy hunting you two. Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.” Viper laughs as the two head off, “We won’t and get rid of those arms or I’m taking them myself.” Shaw laughs, “Screw you too V!” V shakes his head chuckling and raises his middle finger to Shaw as the mentor and his pupil head off.
"He seems nice." Luna says to V. Viper smiles while scoping out the area with his Sniper Rifle, “He’s a handful but he’s good people. Alright, I scouted ahead and found everything we need to watch out for. How about you take that sniper of yours and tell me what you see that’s worth noting?”
Luna nods as she crouches and starts looking through the reticle, “Hmm…” She scans the area spotting two dregs and one vandal up ahead. She also notices a couple spinmetal drums as well. She counts about five, six, seven, ten total. She relays the info back to her mentor who stands behind her watching carefully, “Not bad Luna. You missed one detail though. Want to take a quick look around some of the spinmetal you noticed?” Luna nods and observes the spinmetal drums, “Oh! Some of the spinmetal drums are near Hive corruption!” Viper nods approvingly, “Good observation." Luna continues her thought, "Which means there could be Hive in the area right?” Viper nods, “Exactly. Hive corruption that hits surface level is very rare given the Hive prefers the sanctity of dark catacomb like areas. But sometimes their corruption spreads to the surface which is usually a sign of them trying to expand their territory.” Luna nods listening to her mentor’s lessons, “Since that place is obviously a trap we can either avoid it or plan around the trap. How about you take that sniper and give it a shot at one of the two dregs.”
Luna aims her sights down and looks at one of the two unsuspecting dregs, “Any tips?” Viper crosses his arms watching her carefully, “Relax and take your time with the shot. They don’t see you and you have the element of surprise on your side. Polaris has an eye on your rear normally but you got me here to keep you safe from any sneak attacks. Try to aim for the head like I taught you with your hand cannon. If you can, take down the other target with your next shot.” Luna nods quietly before taking in a deep breath. She keeps a focus on one of them and steadily lines ups her shot. She waits for the right moment slowly pulling the trigger of her rifle. The rifle echoes loudly. The kickback of the sniper was surprisingly minimal and she saw that her sights were still relatively well lined up for a second shot at the other Dreg who just saw their ally die. She takes the second shot. Not a headshot but still a fatal blow as it drops to the ground dead. She looks up to Viper who nods, “Good job Luna. Let’s talk grenades and knives as we proceed forward. Aria!” Aria materializes beside Viper and bounces, “You called V?” Viper chuckles, “Begin long range scans for any Spinmetal reserves and send the coordinates Kali-2 sent us so we know where specifically to go hunting in The Mothyards.” Aria starts scanning with long range radar pulses with her as the center, “Scanning now. Any tunes for today’s adventures?” Luna looks up happy, “Tunes? You like music, Aria?” She looks down at Luna and bounces, “Like it? I love it! Hell, I even sing it.” Viper chuckles, “Save it for after the mission Aria. Consider it our reward for a successful mission.” Aria nods before dematerializing, “Can do V.”
As they walk forward V sees the Vandal they spotted earlier and quickly throws a throwing knife into its skull killing it instantly, “So the first lesson of throwing knives Luna.” she pulls out her throwing knife, “Throw the pointy end into the enemies face. Juicebox if it’s a Vex.” Luna laughs, “Seriously?” Viper chuckles, “It’s how Cayde first taught me when he was a Scout for Andal. Not the best way to teach someone but it worked. I always tell the joke to every new Hunter.” Luna smiles feeling proud that Viper considers her a Hunter, “In all seriousness though Luna. Throwing knives is an art. Sure a Titan like Saint can cave a Kell’s skull in with a headbutt and Warlocks like Rev can disintegrate foes with a touch of their fingers. But us Hunters. We’re all about skill and precision. Plus when you’re completely empty on bullets, strength, and light.” Viper flips another knife effortlessly between his fingers, “There’s nothing a trusty blade can’t fix.” The young awoken looks at her blade with wonder. Viper points to the left, “There’s a target for you to try your first throw on. Don’t be upset if you miss. It takes practice and throwing against moving targets is always different then just throwing them against a target board or a tree.” Luna smirks, “That’s adapting right? A Hunter trademark!” V smiles at that observation she makes, “Now you’re thinking like a Hunter. Now go get that Vandal.” Luna sees the Vandal to her left and throws her knife watching it fly with some speed but it just barely misses the Vandal and alerts him to their presence. Viper and Luna both quickly draw their hand cannons firing in unison at the vandal killing it instantly. Viper spins his gun before putting it back in his holster. Luna lowers her gun and pouts, “I missed.” They walk up and retrieve her knife since she can’t create knives with her light yet. As she picks it up she stares at it with quiet intent trying to gauge how to better utilize it. Viper observes her in silence as well. He can tell she’s trying to understand the weight behind her throws better. The only difference between a training knife versus the throwing knives he conjures as a Gunslinger or for his Blade Barrage is purely weight. Light constructed weapons are actually lighter which means Viper can get a lot more strength, distance, and speed in his throws. So if anything Luna’s actually working harder than usual to master the use of her throwing knife.
Luna looks at Viper, “How long did it take you to use the throwing knife?” Viper smiles, “Honestly? Took me four months. I had to practice like crazy. My aim was always off and then when I did start making hits it was only ever body shots which still hurts my target but sometimes a good throw to the enemy’s head is that small difference between life or death in the heat of battle so I kept practicing harder against enemies. Vex were the easiest to learn from at first. Slow and predictable in their movements and the body shot is what you want when aiming for that juicebox.”
Luna nods and looks back at the Vandal that laid dead from their gunshot wounds, “What about Fallen?” Viper motions her to come and walk with him as he gathers some spin metal from their first checkpoint as he continues to teach his young protégé, “Fallen are harder because they're extremely agile, especially Vandals. I’ve learned to predict where they’ll move to and have my knife ready to be thrown where they’ll end up. It’s especially useful for Vandal snipers. Those guys can cause a lot of trouble for you if you aren’t prepared.”
As they gather all the spinmetal they could collect at each checkpoint within the area Viper summons Aria to map the way to the next area which will also lead them closer to The Mothyards before moving forward, “Let’s keep moving Luna.” She nods, “You got it Viper.” Polaris materializes beside Luna and asks, “Is there anything I should be doing Viper?” Viper smiles at the young ghost, “Always keep your partner safe Polaris. That’s priority one. You scanning for enemies like Aria taught you?” Polaris nods quietly, “Yes sir. But I want to be a little more proactive if I can.” Viper smiles, “I know you do. The important thing is keeping your Guardian safe and vice versa. Don’t know how many times Aria has saved me.”
Aria bounces sassily, “I can tell you the exact number if you’d like.” Viper groans while Luna laughs, “FYI V. It’s well into the triple digits. So you’re welcome.” Luna smiles looking at Aria, “You’re really confident Aria. Much different from most of the other ghosts I’ve met so far.” Aria floats to Luna and Polaris and looks at them, “In my line of work. Being serious or timid all the time is dull especially when you’re the ghost of a Hunter. You need that adventurer’s spirit and a serious attitude to keep up with someone as reckless as V.” Viper interjects, “I’m not THAT bad.” Aria deadpans, “Your mentors were Cayde-6, Tevis Larsen, and Shiro-4. You had bad influences from all three.” Viper waves her off, “I could’ve had worse.” Aria shakes her head laughing, “No. No you couldn’t. Anyways, Checkpoint two is ten klicks away. We got enemies up ahead and not a small number either. How many do you count Polaris?” Polaris shakes quickly to attention, a little nervous being out in the field, “I ping about seven at least.”
Aria nods, “That’s all of them. Now describe things to Luna to give her a better understanding of the enemies formation. Give her as much of an advantage before the enemy is in her sight.” Polaris nods nervously, “R-Right. Um... at least three are grouped together and they're the closest ones. The other four are split on opposite ends in pairs of twos further back.” Viper smiles, “Good work Polaris. Luna given those are most likely Fallen. What do you suspect with the formation?” Luna looks up at V confused at first, “I’m not sure actually.” V stops her and smiles, “Think hard Hunter. The two pairs hanging back sound like?” Viper quietly taps her sniper rifle on her back cluing her in, “Oh! Those must be snipers. Which means the other three must be front line fighters.” Viper nods, “Good guess. Given the size of the enemy squad I suspect at least one of the seven is a Captain.”
Viper takes a knee and looks at Luna, “Looks like this is as good of a time as any to teach you how to create a grenade.” Luna kneels down beside Viper and listens, “Grenades come in all shapes and forms and react to our light depending on the type of grenade we use. More or less we pour our light into the grenades container and depending on the kind of light we pour into it produces unique effects. I’m going to teach you the most basic grenade of the Arc Grenades. Flux.” Aria quickly materializes two Flux Grenade containers for Luna and Viper to hold in their hands, “I’ll try to go slow and we’ll throw them backwards so as to not draw the enemies attention. Now the Flux grenade is the easiest because all you're doing is pouring as much Arc Light as you can into the container before throwing it. The containers do have a limit though. The grenades are functionally sticky bombs. They do the most damage when they attach to their target. So watch carefully.”
Viper grips the grenade in his left hand tightly. He tries to slow the charge as much as he can to show Luna. The Arc energy crackles along his body. It was such an unfamiliar feeling one he hadn’t touched since her passing in respect to the loss of his friend and how much it reminded Revenant of her. As he feels the charge of electricity travel down his arm into his hands the grenade begins to glow with a gentle pale blue light and quickly chucks it back the way the two came. The grenade explodes with a roar like thunder. He looks at Luna and says, “You want to direct your light into the container and once it’s fully charged it’ll glow with that pale blue light and you can throw it. Grenades however as you’ll see when charging them are taxing to create and you’ll need time to recharge before you can throw another. It’s a very rare skill to be able to throw two grenades consecutively.”
Luna nods, “I’ll do my best Viper.” It took her a while to build up her light but the arc energy began to crackle along her body and as it traveled down her arm the grenade began to glow with a pale blue light, “You got it Luna! Hurl it!” She throws it excitedly and V uses this chance to gauge how good her throwing arm is. She threw it about the same distance as Viper which only means her throws will be getting better from here on out, “You ready Luna?” She nods and stands Sniper in hand, “Let’s give them hell.” Viper smiles at that, “Now that’s a good attitude to have.”
As they made their way forward they began to survey the enemy ahead. True to Viper’s guess there was a Captain among the ranks at the front and center flanked by two Vandals. In the back V was pleasantly surprised to see the back formation wasn’t a line of four Vandal snipers but only two with a Dreg by their sides. V looked to Luna, “Let’s see that Hunter instinct in action. Luna, Don’t look at me as your mentor right now. Look at yourself as a Fireteam leader and I’m merely one of your longtime teammates. How are we going to proceed right now?” Luna looked stunned at Viper’s question but quickly began scoping the situation through her rifle, “The Captain is the biggest threat but so are the snipers. If we take out the Captain first we alert the snipers but if we take the snipers out the Captain can call reinforcements. So…” Polaris chimed in, “Luna I’m picking up something in the distance. Seems to be a cache.” Viper smiles, “That’s probably our target. They probably found it before us and are going to steal its contents. Looks like the mission stakes just doubled. What’s the plan Luna?” Luna bit her lower lip under the sudden pressure put upon her and Polaris chimes in again, “You got this Luna. Hunter’s gamble. So take a gamble.” Viper smiles at Polaris’ encouragement and nods.
Viper sees the lightbulb moment pop above her head and she smiles, “We’re going to take out the Captain and Snipers simultaneously.” Viper smirks, “Cleaver. Tell me how as if I don’t already have an idea.” Luna nods, “So first we’ll throw our Grenades at the Captain. The combined power of both should be enough to both destroy his shield and kill him. While our grenades are flying through the air we’ll quickly take aim and snipe the snipers before they have a chance to process anything leaving just the Vandals and Dregs left. Can you handle the two Vandals and I’ll shoot down the Dregs. I need to practice my sniping.” Viper nods, “With pleasure Luna. Let’s get into position.”
The two make their way over to a good vantage point and both kneel with snipers in hand. They take aim on the snipers getting a feel for where they have to look for their respective targets, “Target acquired Luna. How about you?” Luna nods, “Got the poor bastard right in my sights.” Viper nods, “Let the mission begin then.” The two both throw their Flux Grenades into the air and quickly pull their rifles back up. Viper has a lock on his target and shoots the first sniper down in one shot, “Sniper down.” Luna pulls the trigger and watches as the head of her target explodes releasing ether energy and spooking the Dreg, “Me too. What about the Captain?” Polaris chimes in, “Grenades have both attached to the target and will detonate in 3...2...1…” The first grenade explodes causing the shield to break and explode outwards hurting the two Vandals slightly. The second grenade detonates on the Captain’s head killing it instantly, “Captain’s down. Take out the dregs Luna. I got the Vandals.” Viper quickly slings his sniper onto his back and jumps into the action Hand Cannon drawn.
Luna takes aim again and breathes slowly. The Dregs are panicking and moving around to much to get a steady shot. She waits for her opportunity and sees one stop and fire at it. Body shot but it drops to the ground dead. She turns to the other and watches it move and remembers Viper’s lesson from earlier
I’ve learned to predict where they’ll move to and have my knife ready to be thrown where they’ll end up.
Luna takes aim and mutters to herself, “The principle's the same it’s just with a gun instead of a knife. Predict where the dreg will go. Predict where the dreg will go...Oh! Polaris give me the exact coordinates to the cache case.” Polaris immediately pings the coordinates into her helmet and Luna starts adjusting her aim accordingly. The Dreg made a break for it to the cache and wasn’t prepared when as soon as it stepped near the chest it was all over. The roar of her sniper echoed and the Dreg fell to its knees headless.
Viper made short work of the Vandals with a quick headshot to one and a swift and powerful Arc infused punch into the other exploding the skull clean off the body, “Targets eliminated.” Luna quickly catches up to Viper and smiles, “Got mine as well. I also saw where the cache you’re looking for was.” Viper pats her on the head, “Let’s go grab it then.”
They quickly made their way to the chest. Viper knelt down and touched the Spade marking on the top of the chest gently, “Aria.” She materializes, “Yeah V?” Viper looks at the chest for a long while, “Prepare to transmat this back onto the ship.” Aria nods and calls the jumpship over to begin short range transmat. Viper looks over to Luna, “How was your first experience in the field?” Luna jumps excitedly, “It was amazing! I got to see so much and I can’t wait to see what else you have in store for me and we found loot too! What’s inside the chest?” Viper turned and looked at the chest before it disappeared, “Only one way to find out Luna. Mission Accomplished.”
As the two transmat back onto Viper’s jumpship Aria begins to engage the autopilot back to The Last City. Viper looks at the chest and traces his hand over the spade again, “Hey old friend.” Luna looks at Viper curiously, “Viper?” Viper smiles, “Just reminiscing Luna. This chest belonged to Cayde. My mentor and in my eyes the greatest Hunter that ever lived.” He presses the button to open the cache.
The two Hunters and their ghosts look inside to find the cache containing several Omolon weapons, “Heh. Guess the playing card was missing. Better hand these over to Banshee. He’ll make good use of them.” Luna reaches inside, “There’s something on the bottom. A note?” Viper goes beside her and starts reading it, “Looks like a journal entry.”
Mementos from the Wild (0983589022) “-I was told by Andal today I’d be training a new scout today. A fellow Exo who’s apparently mute or just really quiet. This could be interesting Ace. It's always the quiet ones you gotta watch out for. Your old man trying to teach new Hunter old tricks. Better get my game face on. Andal says he’s got a good feeling about this kid and ya know what? So do I. I saw him in action and he’s got quite the sharpshooters eye-”
Viper looks speechless, “...Cayde.” Luna looks at Viper and can tell he looks sad and goes to hug him. The feeling of her warmth snapped him back to reality to which he hugged her back gently, “Thank you Luna.” She wasn’t sure what he was thanking her for but she smiled nonetheless, “You’re welcome Uncle V” Viper chuckled at the nickname and hugged her tighter.
