So this is a fiction co-written between both myself and /u/ImmaFukinDragon and we hope you enjoy it folks
Another day in the simple life of Viper-7. He sits happily on the top of Artifact's Edge at the drop point with his Beloved Sniper Rifle in hand taking aim at any Vex that dare cross his path down below. He was on a mission today and he was going to take his time and enjoy every shot.
The Exo Hunter heard word through the grape vine while making one of his regular visits to the Hangar to feed The Colonel that some Guardians out on Patrol were having troubles making safe landings at The Artifact's Edge drop point on Nessus due to an unusual spike in Vex activity there. He decided to make this his next stop after he finished feeding The Colonel and giving the remaining excess to Saint again to feed his birds. He asked Aria to get in contact with FAILSAFE to give him notice when it was safe to land on Artifact's Edge.
Sniping to Viper was an art. It wasn't flashy and up front like wielding his Hand Cannon and it wasn't elegant or as intimate with a Sword. Sniping was a game of patience before you take that defining shot on your target. For him it was sending a message...maybe more of a warning to all who think they can impede any Guardian's mission. The sound of his Sniper going off roars like thunder that you'd think a Titan might've just Thundercrashed into the area. The sound echoing across the area as a Harpy explodes into pieces and Radiolarian Fluid sprays everywhere.
"That makes 12. You're almost out of ammo V." His ghost Aria chimed in as Viper reloaded the magazine with his next 4 shots. He chuckles, "Can ya transmat some more from the ship Aria? I made sure to pack a few extras before we set sailed. Today's gonna be a long one and as usual the Vex's reaction speed is..."
"Slow? Abyssmal? Non-Existant? Stuck in one of their many exitensial crisis loops?" Aria was one of the more confident and sassier ghosts who shared a great rapport with her guardian. However, that mouth would often get her into trouble if she wasn't too careful while Viper would keep her in line most days but he'd often join in on her remarks as well, "What do Vex even have exitensial crises about anyways? Their literally a litre of milk spending most of it thought process trying to pilot POORLY I might add a robot frame."
Viper gets back to lining up his next shot humming a little tune to which Aria says, "My last song stuck in your head?" Viper smirks...as best as an Exo's face can, "Yes and I hate you for introducing me to all this pre-golden age crap." If she had a face Aria would be smiling triumphantly right now, "You love it when I sing! Otherwise you wouldn't be asking me to do it whenever you're having trouble lining up on those off-days."
"Heads up V. Jumpship incoming for a landing." Aria chimed in one last time as Viper braced for the winds from engines not to knock him off.
Through the rustle of the leaves and grass, forming waves of winds from a ship flying overhead. Twin snakes appeared to intervene with one another, and through them, materialized and floated down a Guardian Hunter. It was another day to be immortally alive, and another day to get some practice done.
And so this Hunter, Ryan, sat nearby Viper-7. Not too far away, but enough of the distance so each other know what the other is doing, where they're sniping. Ryan got comfortable. Left leg dangling down, right leg spread out and near his chest, pressing shooting arm against the leg to keep his aim steady.
"Hunter." Addressed Ryan towards Viper. He wouldn't question why Viper was there, and sniping out some Vex. After all, he came to snipe like an idiot himself, for the sake of getting better.
This one preferred a little flashier style, DARCI exotic sniper resting on his back, which Ryan took out. He took aim. He saw a Hobgoblin through the scope. A deep breathe in, very slow exhale, focusing on the scope.
"Guardian Ryan!" said his Sniper, DARCI. The suddenness made Ryan jump slightly. "You might want to use me sparingly. You've only got a single magazine." said DARCI.
Ryan chuckled, glancing up at Viper, then back down at DARCI. He whispered, "You're embarrassing me right now, but if you be a good girl and shoot my targets in their fluid-tanks and spill me some white radioactive microorganisms, I'll fetch you some more bullets to shove inside your chamber, alright?"
And there formed Iris besides Ryan's shoulder. Ryan's Ghost. As much as Iris was outgoing, rather witty and humorous, she was shy. So she simply glanced up at Viper, and his Ghost every now and then but mainly focused on what Ryan had been up to. Ryan gave a smile up at Iris. He understood. It strangely comforted Iris.
Viper took a quick glance at the Hunter, "Guardian Ryan? Name's Viper-7. You hear about the problems going on here too?" He lined his shot up aiming for the juice box and pulled the trigger again. His shot hit a lone Goblin on watch detail in the distance. The Vex exploded into pieces and radiolarian fluid stained the ground again.
Aria watching intently chimed," You know, there's a really inappropriate joke everytime a Vex explodes..." Viper-7 chuckles, "Please don't. I don't need you embarrassing me in front of another Guardian." Aria's eye blink as she looks to Ryan and Iris, "Oh please. It keeps you on your toes. Am I right? Or am I right?"
Iris bounced softly, if only Ghosts could laugh. "Hello, Viper. My name is.. well, Ryan." Ryan cleared his throat, pretending to know about the Vex problem. He hadn't been paying attention to the news, or anytime Iris ends up ranting about current events, he was too busy punching staplers inside some Fallen's ankles for a hearty laugh.
"Yeah, I heard about the infestation. I thought it would've been a good opportunity for some target practice."
A blue flash, and a gentle kick, Ryan held DARCI elegantly and milked away the Hobgoblin. In the mood to show off, Ryan quickly shot another shot down by Goblin... but missed.
"A clear target, exposed weak-point, and high damage round," started DARCI. "With my help in aim assistance, it is hard to imagine you miss. Are you feeling alright, Guardian Ryan?" Finished DARCI.
Ryan sighed. "We all have those days..." He dodged the question. Sometimes, it's best to give up than explain humans to an AI.
Viper has a light chuckle, "New to Snipers Ryan?" Viper lines up his Sniper and moves it around a little to get a feel for the two harpy's he was aiming for. He's having a little trouble focusing though.
"Aria." His ghost gets close to Viper, "Yeah V?" Viper relaxes his grip, "How about a little ditty?" Aria bounces, "You got it boss." Aria had a beat start playing before she suddenly started singing.
Made my decision to test my limits 'Cause it's my business God as my witness Start what I finished Don't need no hold up Taking control of this kind of moment I'm locked and loaded Completely focused my mind is open~
Viper's grip slowly tightens as he aims down his sights. Aria's singing as always calms him and helps him relax. He pulls the trigger, moves the gun, and pulls the trigger again. Two Harpy's down. He slumps a little and looks at the Guardian.
Ryan smiles. He listens to the beat. Iris, shyly bounced about and spun her shell in a dancing manner, wanting to get to know Aria but still being a few ways off in distance, in a good balance between formal respect and informal familiarity between Ghosts.
Ryan took a deep breathe. He holds it in his lungs. His listens to his heart, feeling it beat in the rythm of the song. In a very slow, gently exhale, he lines up his next few shots properly. He saw which target Viper had locked up on in his scope, and competitively, he took the shot instead. Perfect precision shot.
Another bullet out the chamber. Ryan lines his next shot. BANG, and he popped a minotaur's shield. There goes his fourth. 3 shots left.
He aimed at the center. The weakness. Target Aquired. DARCI activated her perk. Out of breathe, he had to take another one, yet he held the trigger very lightly tugged.
The Exo smiles as best one can with a robotic face with no muscle or bone structure, "Now you're getting it."
Aria makes her way to Iris, "You're Guardian is a quick learner. Unlike mine. You should've seen him the first time he wielded a Sniper."
Viper hisses through his voicebox, "Switch off Aria." He looks back at Ryan, "How many shots you got left? I can get Aria to transmat a few old Heavy Ammo Synthesizers if you want. They're pre Red War. Found them scavenging the EDZ on day. No clue if they still work though."
Ryan sighs, putting down the sniper. "I don't know. I don't particularly want to snipe anymore."
"But--" started DARCI. Then DARCI pondered over her own denial, why she did not want Ryan to stop sniping?
"I know, DARCI, I know.. we'll pick it up a bit later. I wanna go for a drink. Or ramen. Or both. In the end, you can't snipe all day, just sitting there. I mean, you can, but it can get pretty boring and it will get you hungry." Ryan said, holding his palm out for his Ghost.
Iris glanced up at Aria, and then made her way back to Ryan's palm.
"Wanna come for a few drinks? We could exchange a few stories." Ryan looked at Viper.
Viper nodded at Ryan's offer, "I'd like that. Aria!"
His ghost looked at Iris and blinked, "You have got to tell me all about your Guardian when we get back. Coming boss!" Aria bounced happily back to her Guardian.
"Aria can you-" She cuts Viper off, "Already bringing the ship in V. And I let Failsafe know that we managed to clean up a bit and will be back later to clean the rest of the Vex later." Viper shakes his head and but looks amused at Aria's confidence.
Viper holds his hand out, "Ryan it's always nice meeting a fellow Hunter. Where we gonna meet for a drink?"
"Where all Hunters go. Ramen shop!" Said Ryan.
