He awoke in the middle of the night with a start. The dreams were back again, and along with them the screams and green flames that had haunted him for so long now. When he sat up his chest illuminated with the moonlight that was filtering in through the small window of his quarters. Doing his best not to wake the sleeping blue woman laying beside him, he rose and walked to the kitchen. He needed a drink.
It wasn't long before the woman joined him. She embraced him. Their bare skin warmed each other in the cold steel apartment.
"Again?"
He grunted and nodded.
"When are you going to talk to me about this?"
"It doesn't matter."
She took his face in her hands, gently.
"Yes it does. Look at me. Look at me."
Her piercing orange eyes met his grey ones.
"I love you. And you love me. This scares me, Dak. It terrifies me. When you wake up like this... you look sick. I'm worried about you."
He filled a glass with something strong and downed a swig.
"I don't want you worrying about me, Kira."
"How can I not?"
He sighed. "I don't know."
When he put the glass down, he hunched over the counter. "I was on Luna. When... when it happened."
She wrapped him in her arms. "I had no clue that you were that old... oh god. I'm so sorry, Dak."
He stared at the wall with empty eyes. "I saw them do such terrible things, Kira. I can still hear my friends... I can still hear them. There are times when I hope my Ghost won't bring me back. Just so that I won't have to remember what happened on Luna that day. I don't know how I made it out alive. How he didn't kill me too."
She filled his glass more and poured one for herself. "It's okay. You don't have to let it all out at once, okay? I'll stay up as long as you need me to."
He nodded. She kissed his cheek and wrapped her fingers into his.
"Come back to bed. You're not alone. I'll always be here for you."
They both knew it was a lie. The inevitable would catch up with one of them at some point. He finished his drink and brought the bottle with them to bed.
