Hey y’all, I’ve been thinking about room design for a master suite renovation in my new home and have pretty much struck out on finding a layout we like. But then, I’m no designer. Outline of my thoughts/considerations and photos/layout are below. Please let me know your thoughts!
So, for pre-renovation status:
Here’s a floor plan of the master suite. Each grid square is 2’ on each side and drawing is to scale.
Here’s a set of photos of the pre-renovation area. Note that the photos are numbered and at the end of the album there’s a markup of the floor plan that shows the perspective of each photo.
Thoughts on the re-design:
No real budget constraints.
All walls can be removed. All fixtures moved. All plumbing/electrical can be relocated. Entryway will be removed, replacing the door with a window, most likely. Might just turn it into wall.
New suite should have bedroom, closet and bathroom. No other uses are needed. If anything else is included, a sitting area would be the most natural.
Just the two of us living in the house, so no real need for significant privacy barriers between the suite and the downstairs living space.
I’m leaning toward a semi-open floor plan for the suite, but without direct line of site from the bed to other elements (so bathroom can be used in low light without significantly disrupting a still sleeping partner). That’s not a particularly well-developed or closely-held preference, though.
I like the idea of a zero-entry shower, without no or minimal enclosure (think the concrete shower photo in the top right on the inspo board linked below). Able and willing to waterproof a large area and sort out the grading/drainage issues that creates.
I can vault the ceiling and we think that’d be a cool look. Likely will want to integrate that into the renovation.
This is my wife’s inspiration board on Pinterest for the bathroom. Mostly finish ideas, but might be helpful for layout.
I’m having trouble finding a use for the nook next to the stairs. Closest I’ve come to an idea that I like would be something like this, flipping that railing into a new wall and using the space as a toilet nook. As I’m thinking about that more, I think I’d move the door into the nook so that it’s on the side at the top of the stairs instead of on the end.
That’s pretty much all I can think of. Would love to hear any ideas for layouts and finishes!
Will be online most of the day and I'm happy to answer any questions!
