How would you remodel this kitchen?

Hello! My friend just purchased this home and I want to help them re-do the kitchen. Thinking about peel and stick tiles but unsure about color… Would also LOVE to do something different with the cabinets without replacing them. (Thinking about painting light grey and making handles black). What are your thoughts and what would you do?

they are not a fan of the cabinets and think it looks outdated, like early 2000s. They want changed but it's a good idea to wait a bit more!
