I had a lot of expectations from the new Theater fragrances when I first saw them. I bought a sample of Tragedy last winter which ended up being a decent purchase that I still layer with L'Occitane Verbena on occasion. So it's safe to say that Grotesque and Ballad piqued my interest immediately. Grotesque called to me a bit more than Ballad did and I placed an order for a 30 ml bottle.
A week later, I excitedly opened my package and wow. What a beautiful box. How thoughtfully crafted! The bottle, despite the plastic cap didn't feel flimsy and had a decent heft to it. Loved that when you turn the bottle around, you can kinda see something written at the back of the label-sticker. Overall, not something I would expect from a bottle that cost ₹500.
Without any adieu sniffed the bottle and nightmare. Grotesque smells like a teacher who bullied me in school. It smells like what a lot of young women in their mid-20s used to smell in the late 2000s. It smells like some of those same women even today. It is little claustrophobic for me.
I did not want to shelve the perfume just because of my one trial. A week later, I tried it out again. This time, it still smells like a basic b---h, but I was now able to sense the ozonic note. I don't get any brightness from the orange but I lot of sweetness, from the middle notes I'm only able to make out Ylang Ylang. But I get almost nothing out of the base notes. No, sandalwood, no vetiver. I get some amber and musk, but together they make the scent oppressive for me.
I was very excited for this perfume, but it ended up being too sweet for me. I'm going to shelve it, and let it macerate for a year. Hopefully, it'll improve. If not, then I'm gonna gift it to someone.
I will say though - this could be my own unique experience. I think Theater is going in the right direction and I am excited to see where they take Indian perfumery. And despite my experience, I still think Grotesque was a decent attempt for the price.
