Dried/cracking patch on the underneath skin underneath my nail won't go away

I've had this dry patch on my pointer finger that has been there for ~2 months. It goes in waves or intensity, will get better then the next day start to dry out again and eventually crack. It is usually raw and painful.
No matter what I put on it (hydrocortisone, lotion, skinfood) it does not help.
Any advice? Will be scheduling an appointment with a dermatologist this week
