[Opinion] Broncos are going to trade down out of the #5 spot and here's why.

Hear me out on my wild ass theory.

Keenum is not a bridge gap at this point with a $36M contract with $25M of that guaranteed. This deal is a great scenario for both sides. If Case is the guy the FO (and especially Kubiak) thinks he is, then Case is lined up for another big payday from the Broncos in 2 years. The Broncos downside is minimal with just a 2 year contract. But if this was a gap deal, why guarantee 75% of the contract? So IMO, this is not a gap contract, but a commitment from the Broncos that Case is our starting QB for at least the next two years. Keenum just turned 30 last month, so he has some serious tread still on the tires - say another 4-5 seasons.

So holding onto the premise that Case is the starting QB for at least 2 years. Why would we draft our future starting QB at #5 and have him sit for 2 years? Doesn't make any financial sense or team chemistry sense. The Broncos are dying for an offensive leader in the huddle, locker room and publicly. Case has shown tremendous leadership on and off the field the last few years.

Back to my wild ass theory. What killed us the last two seasons? No NFL caliber starting QB, an offensive line that could pass block and consistently run block and a DL that can stop the run. With the loss of Talib, we are a bit short on the CB position now also. So with those needs (A starting RT, a starting G or two, DL help and maybe also a new star CB) how do we feel those massive gaps?

Something must be in the works with the FO and Von Miller cap space movement. They must be targeting some trade or FA. But we are still pretty tight on 2018 cap space and 2019 looks even worse. So I doubt there is any major FA (large contract guy) heading our way.

So we are still tight on cap space, we have massive offensive line needs and some gaps in our DL (especially with the Gotis issue hanging out there) and need some CB/DB help. So how to solve those issues with tight gap space? Our only recourse is through the draft. So assuming with are not going QB at #5 since Case is our guy, it seems the smartest move is to trade down out of #5 due to the positions HUGE value.

Again, just my wild ass ideas. But #5 is just to high of a draft spot for Barkley when we have CJ. I love Nelson, but is he really worth a #5? So look at what Indy just got from a QB hungry Jets for trading down 3 spots. They get the 6th overall pick, the 37th pick, the 49th pick AND the Jets second round pick in 2019!!

We all know Buffalo is dying for a QB as AJ is not the solution. And they have been stockpiling (similar to our Broncos) picks. They have the 12th and 22nd picks in the 1st round and the 53rd and 56th in the 2nd round. Their options are to either trade with the Browns for the 4th pick, which isn't going to happen with Barkley still available or to try to move up to 2nd pick from the Giants, who desperately need a QB to replace old man Manning II. So the #5 pick has tremendous value as there is no way Allen is slipping down to the 12th spot with a QB needy team with Indy at #6 now.

So I think the smartest and honestly the only way to solve all of the Broncos ills is to trade down with Buffalo for their 12th and 22nd 1st round picks and hopefully one of their 2nd rounders (probably the 56th). If my wild ass theory holds water, our draft capital would be HUGE.

Round One: 12th and 22nd

Round Two: 40th and 56th

Round Three: 71st and 99th

Round Four: 106th and 109th

Round Five: 142nd, 155th (Talib) and the 163rd

Round Six: 182nd? But not sure how the Siemian deal works out.

Round Seven: TBD

That's ELEVEN valuable draft picks just in the first five rounds. Probably doubtful we are drafting 11 players in five rounds, but that also is a LOT of draft capital to move around and get specific players/positions that we need to fix the OL, DL, CB and a few other needs.

What do you think??
