So, crazy idea. Kris isn't possessed; they're the one in control.
I believe the red heart represents us, the players, and that it needs a vessel like Kris or Frisk to properly interact with the world.
Thing is, Kris is very clearly able to eject and insert us whenever they want, I guess based on the end of Chapter 2.
Kris is using us.
Question is though, why? Only thing I can think of is that the red soul grants the ability to use saves, which Undertale established a very rare and very powerful ability from an in-universe context.
