There is so much discussion on reddit regarding tool analysis on shell casings. Many people call it junk science. However, in Indiana it is admissible. In Turner v. State of Indiana, 953 N.E.2d 1039, a defendant challenged the admissibility of expert testimony comparing tool marks on a spent shell casing found at the scene of a crime to tool markings found on an unspent round found in his home. The Supreme Court of Indiana held the expert’s testimony regarding fire arms tool mark identification was admissible and upheld the defendant’s conviction. In that case they did not have the firearm to use in the comparison and it was still admissible. There is a lengthy discussion in the opinion if you want to read.
