Want to come back. What amount of lore has been added?

Played Alpha and Beta, played on the opening day, ran the largest Defiance Wiki on the internet before I got too busy, loved the show. The thing I loved the most was backstory and lore.

I know they've added things to the game, events and what not but have they added any sort of story and lore. Even tidbits here and there, like an explanation for these events.

I'm not a super fan of just shooting wave after wave for no particular reason so a little reason would be great.

Any new characters, places, things, etc?
