How is the mind able to conjure up things we’ve never seen, heard of, or experienced?

For example, you start to trip and see things you’ve never seen before or associate any meaning with, such as religious symbols or figures, names, places, etc. How are we able to visualize or conceptualize things we’ve yet to encounter? Is it because we simply suppress things in our subconscious and don’t realize it? Is encountering these things again what we call deja vu?
