A friend has told me multiple times to add this here, and I know my project will probably get shot on but whatever…I’m enjoying it.
Wife asked me to demolish an old 12x24 storage shed and build a playground for our 3 year old. I knew this shed had roughly 15, 4x4 posts cemented into the ground and a roof… This didn’t seem like a super easy task. I instead opted to repurpose it, and turn it into a gazebo. I also mentioned I could just add a playground into the corner of it…. This was 2 months ago… I have a job, and work on this every free moment I can.
-I ripped off all the paneling and got to work. -Added knee braces with 1/2X10 thru bolts
Figured out where I wanted the floor and “framed it”?
-Decided some paneling would actually look nice and put some new stuff around the top.
- dug out and replace roughly 6 of the footings.
-sistered 2x4’s to posts, 4x4’s to posts 6x6’s to posts. Just sistered everything because yolo.
-Added joists every 12 inches. Some were 10 inches, one was 13 inches. As the title says, I’m not smart. Don’t worry, the one that was 13 inches got sistered.
-added a bunch of blocks between the joists and cemented in roughly 8 more 4x4’s (pier supports?)
-dropped the floor of the fort a few inches so it could be 2 story and put down some Trex. Gaps probably too small but whatever.
-custom painted ladder and entry sign.
-cut stringers so kids that are small can go down the future deck slide.
-Spent the better part of 30 hours adding construction adhesive to the cracks in the posts with clamps and screws. Then added a few hundred ounces of wood filler and wood glue along with 75 sanding disks.
-added small 5 foot high deck off the side of the gazebo for future slide.
-started putting Trex down.
There’s a lot more to do and I’ll update when it’s done.
So far she’s got about 20 lbs of deck screws, 15 lbs of Trex screws, 25, 1/2X10 thru bolts, 50 4 inch lag screws, a few hundred ounces of wood filler/ glue, 75 sanding disks, a few of my tears, and a gallon and a half of brown paint on her.
