Long story somewhat short: I woke up today to an app I have for a job saying my wages were being garnished 25%. Apparently I was sued for a credit card debt that was from 2020/21 for just over $1k from when I lived in Minnesota.
I don't open mail unless I'm expecting something or i know what it is and I dont answer phone calls if I dont recognize the number. I dont like junk mail or dealing with scammers. I was never served and never signed for anything nor ever spoke to anyone from a debt collector or law firm.
I moved to Missouri in July and technically while I am employed at said company I haven't worked for them at all due to bs I've been dealing with since the day of my transfer from Minnesota. I am currently working full time for another company that is only based in Missouri and had to buy another car as my old one was not capable of being registered in Missouri due to their emissions and safety inspection laws. I ended up living in hotels for over a week because I had to wait on my place to finish being remodeled (I'm renting) and I used every penny I had plus borrowed money from my parents to survive until I got the other job.
So now I make less money, pay almost double in rent, have a car payment plus full coverage insurance payment and there's no way I can afford to lose 25% of my income. I'd end up losing the car due to not being able to pay and my mom cosigned for me so it's not just my credit at stake now.
My question is this, once they realize they garnished a job I don't make money at can they remove it and garnish the other job? Also I haven't found a concrete answer to this but are they able to garnish my wages now that I'm no longer in Minnesota? The job that's being garnished now I was originally hired at in Minnesota and then transferred to Missouri so I can understand that. But my current company is only based in Missouri.
Also can they steal money from one of my checking accounts along with the wage garnishment? I have several checking accounts because I split my paycheck up to an account based on what the money is for. One for rent, one for car payment, one for tool bill, etc. None of the accounts are Minnesota based banks that I'm aware of, they're all "online" banks like credit karma, Samsung and such. I'm just super worried about screwing my mom's credit up because she was nice enough to help me out.
