My wife had a car accident when she was 22. She was on her parents insurance. She went to the hospital in an ambulance. Apparently, her parents insurance was billed, who subsequently billed her parents. However, her parents never paid the bill. Since it was my wife as the patient, she's on the records, and now (at age 27) she is getting collections letters.
Does she have any obligation to thos debt since it was technically billed to her parents insurance and her parents, but she was the patient? She had no idea of this bill until the collection notice because when the accident happened she was living away from home at college and then moved out after graduation. Her parents never informed her of the bill, the insurance company, and the hospital will not discuss the bill with her because she is not the "insurance account holder" even though her name is on the bill.
What are her/our options?
