How can we get people to think more globally?

It occurs to me everyday that somebody says "oh, anybody can make it if they put in the work" or "we don't have to worry so much about poverty with a social security net." At which point I have to immediately remind them that 90% of the world's population has no shot at either because of geography.
We're so used to the first world that it becomes impossible to divorce oneself from the first world mindset towards politics. Is there any way to make globalism easier for ourselves and for others?
