Defining lil g and Big G. (God, that is.)
Post Body

Two definitions of a god.

  1. "The creator entity whose Will begun the universe". (i.e: the Abrahamic God [uppercase G])

  2. "If all the knowledge of your group -- humans in 2016 in this case -- was broken down numerically, and assigned the baseline unit of 1.0, a (lowercase g) god would be any entity that alone surpasses 1.0."

While the first definition is hardly worth defending because it is a cultural staple of life on Earth today, the second definition is much more interesting.

It relies on the belief that a god must be near omnipotent, omniscient, or omnipresent in order to be a relevant entity worthy of acknowledgement or reverence. The problem with this seemingly simple assumption occurs when you consider that those "omni" words leave no room for categorization.

In a universe as mind-f*ckingly immense as ours, there is almost definitely some consciousness out there besides the hypothetical Big G.

Where does this leave us, dear reddit reader?

Well. At 1.0. That number may grow by the minute, but there it is, our place in the universe.

If I were to travel to the year 1800 with Google capabilities, I do not think that would make me a lil g. However, I would probably be significantly above any other individual of the time, maybe 0.3 level?

The lil g definition is interesting because it circumvents the need for an almighty God if you want your prayers answered. Perhaps the green matter of the Earth shares a collective consciousness that does not even see time in the 3rd dimension. "Mother Nature" could score superhero, demigod, or even god status under the lil g definition -- one that in my not-so-humble opinion is much more useful and likely to be accurate than traditional Abrahamic beliefs.
