Lucifer is not another name for Satan and the terms should not be used as replacements for each other.

"Lucifer" is the Latin translation for name "Morning Star." Morning Star is used as a name for a person in four places in the Bible, and none of the four are referring to Satan.

  1. Job 38:7 is the first place the term arguably appears, but in this place the term is used as "morning stars" plural--not singular. In the context of Job, it is used to refer to the heavenly host of angels celebrating as God created the heavens and the earth. This is not a reference to Satan.

  2. Isaiah 14:12 is the second place Morning Star appears in the Bible, and the first place it appears as a potential name for an individual. However, if you read the entire chapter, you will notice that Isaiah 14:4 explicitly states that it is being used as a taunt against the King of Babylon and how his reign will come to an end. Therefore, Morning Star in this context cannot be seen as referring to Satan.

  3. 2 Peter 1:19 is the third place in the Bible where the term Morning Star is used. In this Chapter of 2 Peter, the author is speaking about the prophecy that Jesus will return and that the reader must have faith that he will indeed return as told by scripture. In context, the term "morning star" is used to refer to as the return of Jesus.

  4. Finally, Revelation has two references to Morning Star. In Revelation 22:18, Jesus is speaking and identifies himself as the Morning Star. In Revelation Chapter 2, Jesus, again speaking through the author, promises to give the morning star to "[t]he one who is victorious and does my will to the end." See Revelations 2:26-28. Therefore, we can see that neither of the references to Morning Star in Revelations are referring to Satan.

Conclusion: There is no place in the Bible that identifies Satan as the Morning Star and therefore Lucifer should not be used as a name for Satan.
