Why did Mao feel the need to emancipate the peasantry if they already owned their means of production?

This is an extension of my last post. I have been informed that the distinction between agrarian proletariat and agrarian peasants is that the proletariats were hired or employed while the peasant owned their means of production. But then why did they (and Mao) feel as if they needed a communist revolution?
