Can “War Communism” be justified as a reasonable ideological extension of Marxism-Leninism?

War communism is probably (one of) the most commonly criticized aspect of Lenin’s administration, possibly of the soviet union as a whole as well. Is this simply a way that socialism needed to adapt to fit the circumstances? Or is this better looked at as separate from the rest of ML ideology?
