So, here's some context for the origin of this question. I am an omnivore, and my girlfriend is vegan. She is ok with me being omnivore, and I'm ok with her being vegan. When she cooks, I don't notice it's "vegan" and when I cook, i replace meat with tofu or ground round (she also checks other ingredients for animal products). I have nothing at all against veganism, and never have, i just by virtue of my upbringing never gave it much thought before meeting my girlfriend.
So, we moved in together, and as such I'm going vegan by proximity and ease of meal prep and planning. No other reason. I don't have a desire to protect animals, i view pets differently than livestock, and i can compartmentalize the difference between animal abuse and using animals as labour or food. I will concede that i wholly agree with the fact that vegan food requires less real estate than meat and dairy, but i digress.
So, my literal question for discussion: What are your thoughts on being vegan solely to make grocery shopping and meal prep easier?
And a more philosophical take on the same question: If someone completely eats and lives vegan, but doesn't do it for the animals, can they call themselves vegan?
Let me know your thoughts.
