How to play yamato correctly?

I live the theme of this character, and in theory she'd be my favorite. Every time I play her I do decently well in early and mid game. In late game fights, I feel like all I do is use my spells/get autos in, get low and then have to ult and run back to base so I don't die after ult is over. Yeah even with refresher too, then I just have to get out in my second ult. Am I doing it wrong? Does the 3 actually heal you for a lot and allow you to stay in fights?
