Is fishing a waste of time later in the game?

New player here. I've been fishing to earn my food since it's very easy and cheap to kill some rats and cockroaches and uses their meat to magically multiply the point worth of food and if I'm lucky, I can kill them without having to shoot a single arrow or bullet. However, I read from a comment in wiki that many players think that fishing is not as effective as other options but great for the early game. Is that true? I was about to camp in fishing village for a while to buy Sturdy Fishing Rod a few times everytime the trader resets but now I'm not sure.
