The Races of the North
Post Body

L'zthnyl could feel the winds of change bringing a new feeling around the world. Creatures, mortals, but ones with more than a simple deer or horse, appeared across the world. With this new feeling came L'zthnyl's decision to release his newest creation, something that would populate his home area of the Rotbog. They were the Ogres.

These creatures were humanoid in their appearance, being slightly larger being around 8-9 feet tall with the strength of a large bear. They had a single horn similar to a rhinoceros on their forehead that varied in length. They had two large canines on their lower jaw that would protrude on their faces, and lack hair on their head and most of their body. They often use warpaint to decorate themselves, and wear earrings to provide some semblance of wealth. They otherwise avoid wearing much clothes, for physique and strength is extremely important in ogre society.

Ogre society is structured into clans with chieftains that lead alongside shamans that lead spiritually. Chieftains are chosen by strength, as any ogre can challenge the current chieftain to a battle of strength in which the winner takes control of the clan. Shamans are hierarchical as well, with feats of magic being used to categorize their strengths. These shamans are seen to be in tune with a more primal magic than most. However, due to their lacking intelligence, they struggle to control such powerful magics.

These ogre clans have small towns where they have wooden palisades and huts within the Rotbog. They herd goats and harvest mosses and other small plants that they eat. As they live in such a cold region, they are naturally resistant to cold temperatures and don't require much sustenance to survive. The clans are known to fight each other for dominance and survival, and as an excuse to ensure only the hardiest of ogres survive.

L'zthnyl realized that there were other creatures in the northern regions that desired intelligence, and in his desire to learn and play with the world granted them such power. The first were the Dybukk in the Northern Steppes, who began to live in multiple extended family units that served as the core unit for tribes. They would live a nomadic lifestyle unlike the ogres, and would herd the bison that live there and would serve as their main food source, while control over the lakes in the east would be a major source of contention amongst the tribes.

The horns of a Dybukk play an important role in society, as their size and ornateness are used as a symbol of prestige. They would decorate them with jewelry to symbolize their power and wealth within their tribe, and the chieftains would often cover them with such decoration that the horns themselves would be difficult to discern. Agility and speed plays a large role in their society, as they mainly use bows and javelins to hunt their fast moving prey. However, they would rarely leave the steppe.

The other race to be gifted with intelligence from L'zthnyl would be the Minotaur that roam the great forest below the Rotbog. They were the apex predators of the region before L'zthnyl came and granted them his blessings, and they would be the ones that most obviously carried his markings. They would be incredibly resistant to disease and sickness, and their shamans are well tuned with the poisons and antidotes of the forest.

Many of the more well-tuned shamans would receive things like a series of boils on their skin and various other symbols of sickness and plague that would make their strength and influence with L'zthnyl obvious. The minotaur however still lack much advanced thought, and survive simply based off simple power structures and authoritarian rule. The strong ruled the meek, and many of the minotaur would often leave the forests to raid the human settlements of the south. They would be a menace well known to the races of the region.
