RP: The Tedeshan had since time immemorial been a people of the oceans' coasts. The coasts provided nourishment in the form of fish, quick travel by boat, and the wondrous beauty of the waves. But the largest Tedeshan settlements, including the grand-ish proto-proto-city of Shaikarn (lit. "the salt mine"; urbanization RP post coming soonTM ), are now located on the Shaikyr river; ironically named after the salt flats that surround it, despite being the largest single source of freshwater in Tedeshan lands. This is because the big freshwater river allows lots of crops to grow, and good crops plus fish is better than mediocre crops plus fish.
However, the Tedeshan are, like most peoples, attached to the familiar, and loathe to deviate from tradition. So, the bulk of the river beyond its coastal mouth was only sparsely settled at best. Especially since the Tedeshan's meagre farming expertise was hardly sufficient to outweigh the numerous sustenance, economic, and cultural benefits of being on or near the coastline. At least, that was the case until quite recently. An influx of new agricultural practices and techniques have recently been made known to the Tedeshan via their burgeoning trade with the Eheni and the RahmtÊŠ. These practices and techniques, such a digging ditches for irrigation and harvesting crops with sickles, have made the riverside much more attractive all of the sudden.
Along with the sudden attractiveness of the freshwater riverbed, it just so happens that the Tedeshan homelands are facing a small influx of refugees, fleeing from the rapant and unprovoked savagery of the Exaanos barbarians to the north. As most of the existing Tedeshan villages hardly have the food to support dozens of shellshocked refugees, the bulk of them have been forced to strike out on their own, and found their own villages. And the shores of the Shaikyr river were ripe for the settling.
Travestus was one such refugee. As the eldest son of a slain village elder, it naturally fell to him to find a new home for his family and friends. After a long trek southwards out of Exaanos-threatened lands, Travestus was predictably turned away from each Tedeshan village he passed, since they weren't made of free food for three dozen random refugees. Travestus, first learning of these agricultural advances from Eheni merchants in a southern Tedeshan village, decided to lead his people westwards, towards the river. There he would find a new home for his wife, his children, and the other survivors who had placed their trust in him. A home of bountiful harvests, swankly riverside property, and no dirty barbarians pillaging and raping everything in sight.
