Vladio was a pretty smart guy. Or, at least, he thought of himself as pretty smart. All of his friends considered him more of a weirdo than a man of practical intelligence, however. Sure, Vladio was a perfectly capable (if not particularly stellar) fisherman, and a passable paddler (if not the fastest around), but he much preferred to spend his time staring at stars and theorizing (or, less charitably, complaining) about the weather. Still, he was generally an amicable and easygoing lad, so Vladio was hardly an outcast due to his eccentric hobbies (his friends were mentioned above, after all).
So, one day, when Vladio told his regular gang that he was sure that there was another tribe of people to the north, his friends laughed and told him he was nuts. After all, he thought that demigods from the little moon were responsible for the week-long disappearance of his family's dog (rather than, say, the dog getting lost while investigating a funny scent and taking a while to wander back home). But Vladio was uncharacteristically insistent about this, rambling on about seeing regular billows of smoke from the north, about the birds acting all funny and agitated, and other such alleged proof of new, nearby human habitation.
So, his friends, always on the lookout for an excuse to sail around idly and not do anything useful, agreed to a wager. They would "borrow" some canoes from the villages, and sail north for a day. If they found no other humans before nightfall, Vladio would take sole blame for the suspiciously missing canoes. If they did in fact find other humans, the other lads would take the blame, and not implicate Vladio at all. So, in the early hours of the morning, before all the old farts who hated fun had arisen, the lads got up, grabbed some light provisions, and began paddling due north.
Four plank canoes, each carrying about four lads, enough water for most of a day's sustenance, rations of salted fishies and hardtack-esque bread, and the usual assortment of spears, knives, bows, and pointy things, venture off from the northeastern Tedeshan coastline, sailing northwards along the coast.
